Practical local climate change responses

A briefing and discussion evening, Tuesday 21 September at 7pm

United Church, East Street, Bridport, DT6 3LJ

There are plenty of practical, positive ways that households and community groups can respond to the increasing climate extremes we’re seeing both locally and across the world. This evening is part of Great Big Green Week, and is a chance to learn more about what we can do locally, have your say, and discuss future plans. It’s a joint event by Bridport Food Matters, Transition Town Bridport, and West Dorset Friends of the Earth.

We will cover four main topics, with a short briefing on each, then small groups to explore ideas and questions in more detail, then a general discussion on insights and next steps. There will also be information available on other local initiatives such as Plastic-free Bridport and Bridport Tree Planting. Representatives of a range of local organisations have been invited, to help widen involvement from our local community. The topics and presenters are:

Town Council: highlighting the priorities in their Climate Emergency Action Plan, and the areas where they need help from the wider community to take things forward. By David Dixon.

Food: there is great potential to increase local production and reduce dependence on imports. Briefing from Candida Blaker of Bridport Food Matters.

Home energy: support is available for home insulation, and upcoming Open Greener Homes can give ideas on other steps like eco-friendly heat sources. Briefing from Sam Wilberforce, Transition Town Bridport.

Mutual support: there are practical steps that households and community organisations can take to be more prepared for sudden problems like floods and interruption to essential services. Briefing from Alan Heeks of Seeding our Future.

Practicalities:

Venue: At the United Church, East Street, Bridport, DT6 3LJ. We will be limiting total numbers at the event to enable social distancing. If rules at that time prevent an in-person meeting it will be held on Zoom.

Donations: This is a free event, but we are requesting donations to cover the cost of the venue, suggested £2-3 per person.

Timing: Doors open 6.45pm. Meeting starts 7.00pm, finishing about 8.45pm.

Booking: Please book via Eventbrite: https://practical-local-climate-change.eventbrite.co.uk.
